What to expect

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

The Lido reopens its doors on the Champs-Elysées from December 2023 and offers us nothing less than the legendary musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is a Broadway musical that first premiered in 1962. It was created by composer Stephen Sondheim, librettist Burt Shevelove and comedian Larry Gelbart.

The musical is set in ancient Rome and follows the adventures of Pseudolus, a slave who seeks to gain his freedom. To achieve this, he must help his young master, Hero, to conquer the heart of the beautiful Philia, a young girl who lives in the neighboring house. But Philia is already promised to a military captain, Miles Gloriosus, who is soon to arrive in Rome to marry her. To complicate matters, the house next door is actually a brothel, run by a devious matron named Domina. Pseudolus and Hero must therefore compete in cleverness to achieve their ends.

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is known for its wacky humor, colorful characters and upbeat music. The songs from the musical are musical theater classics, such as "Comedy Tonight", "Lovely" and "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid".

The staging of the musical is also a key element of its success. The stage is often filled with extravagant sets, costumes and elaborate choreography, which help create an atmosphere of joyous farce. Actors often toy with the audience, breaking the fourth wall to interact directly with viewers.

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" won several prestigious awards, including six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical was also a big hit with audiences, with over 960 performances on Broadway.

In summary, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is a fun and entertaining musical that transports viewers to the world of ancient Rome, where the wacky plot and colorful characters promise to make them laugh from start to finish.

So don't miss one of the 60 performances of the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Lido de Paris, certainly the most anticipated show of the end of 2023 with Starmania!

The Lido de Paris is thinking big for its 27th review, released in the spring of 2015.
