The Palace of Versailles, or simply Versailles, is a royal castle about 20 kilometers southwest of the French capital. In 1682, the court of Versailles was the center of political power in France and the king lived there permanently. Versailles is famous not only for its magnificent castle, but also to be the symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.

The castle covers 6.32 hectares divided into 2,300 rooms, including 1000 open at the museum. The park of Versailles covers 815 hectares with 93 hectares of gardens, and includes the Petit and Grand Trianon, the Queen's Hamlet, the Grand and Petit Canal, a menagerie, an orangery and the water part of the Swiss.
