What to expect

An exhibition at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, titled Sam Szafran. Obsessions of a Painter, opened on September 28, 2022, and will run until January 16, 2023. The exhibition will showcase approximately seventy paintings by the Franco-Polish artist Sam Szafran.

Szafran was born in Warsaw in 1921 and settled in France in 1947. He is regarded as one of the most significant painters of his generation, with his works exhibited worldwide.

During World War II, Szafran was a member of the French Resistance. He was arrested in 1943 and sent to Auschwitz, where he was interned in the concentration camp until his liberation in 1945. After the war, Szafran resumed his painting career and achieved international success.

Sam Szafran maintained a close relationship with the Musée de l'Orangerie. He exhibited his works there on several occasions, and the museum even organized a retrospective of his work in 2007. Szafran was also actively involved in the museum's programming and frequently gave art lectures at the Orangerie.

Szafran passed away in 2019, at the age of 98, and his death was a significant loss to the art world, especially for the Musée de l'Orangerie, which will always remember him as one of its most important artists.

The exhibition will provide a comprehensive overview of Szafran's body of work, from his early paintings to his final pieces. Visitors will see how Szafran's style evolved throughout his career and how he approached different subjects.
