What to expect
The ARABOFUTURS exhibition invites you on an unprecedented journey into contemporary Arab art, from April 23 to October 27, 2024 at the Arab World Institute. Immerse yourself in futuristic worlds and explore the visionary perspectives of 17 talented artists from diverse backgrounds within Arab culture and the diaspora.
A Unique Artistic Exploration
ARABOFUTURS stands out for its ability to blend anticipation and science fiction with profound reflections on our current societies. Videographers, visual artists, photographers, and performers come together to create a laboratory of dynamic hypotheses. Each of their works offers a unique and bold perspective on contemporary challenges, while dreaming of the possible worlds of tomorrow.
The exhibition begins with an introduction to the pioneering concept of Gulf Futurism, developed by Sophia Al-Maria and Fatima Qadiri in 2012. This artistic approach questions accelerated hypermodernization and hyperconsumerism in the Gulf region. Works like Sophia Al-Maria's gigantic labyrinthine mall illustrate these themes with captivating intensity.
Parallel and Immersive Narratives
ARABOFUTURS also distinguishes itself through its exploration of parallel and amplified worlds. For example, Meriem Bennani and Sara Sadik create immersive installations blending humor and references to globalized pop culture with representations of Moroccan or Maghrebi culture and history in France. The retro-futuristic photographs by Skyseeef, featuring flying cars, also contribute to this augmented everyday life.
Some artists, such as Ayham Jabr and Mounir Ayache, embrace the technoscientific SF aesthetic that emerged in fanzines in the 1930s. Ayham Jabr gained recognition for a series created in besieged Damascus, while Mounir Ayache offers an installation composed of 3D sculptures, digital prints, and an immersive video game on the imaginary journey of Hassan al-Wazzan.
Hybrid and Poetic Futures
The "Hybrid Futures" section opens doors to speculation and new possibilities. Here, hybridizations, myth writings, and new humanities come to life. Neïla Czermak Ichti exposes strange otherness and desirable monstrosity through paintings of witches and antennaed women. Tarek Lakhrissi offers a "poetic repair" with serene demons, while Ayman Zedani explores transhumanism and the philosophy of animated matter in his video works.
Larissa Sansour and Søren Lind, Aïcha Snoussi, and Hicham Berrada propose a poetic reflection intersecting science fiction, archaeology, and politics. Their works implement political, queer, or technological myths, transforming into historical interventions between invention of the past and critique of the present.
Essential Reflections on Ecology
The exhibition concludes with a crucial theme of ecology. Hicham Berrada plays with terrestrial boundaries between organic and inorganic matter in his organic worlds, while Zahrah Al Ghamdi presents assemblies of leather pieces that proliferate like a living organism, symbolizing successful adaptation to a post-human world. This vision of resilience and renewal offers a powerful conclusion to the exhibition, highlighting the importance of rethinking our relationship with nature.
