What to expect

From June 27, 2025, the Hôtel de la Marine Opens Its Doors to a Unique Artistic Experience Promising to Captivate Visitors Through the Awakening of the Senses

The exhibition The Seven Celestial Senses, organized by the Fondation The Al Thani Collection in collaboration with the Centre des monuments nationaux, goes beyond the usual museum framework. It invites everyone to feel, perceive, and interact with art in an immersive and deeply sensory way.

This exhibition does more than just present artworks. It tells a story—the story of our perceptions—through a selection of contemporary and historical works that engage in dialogue around a theme as intimate as it is universal: our seven senses. Beyond the five senses we all know—sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste—two often overlooked but essential dimensions are added today: the sense of balance (or vestibular) and proprioception, which allows us to perceive the position of our body in space.

Step Into the Sensory World of the Exhibition "The Seven Celestial Senses" in Paris

An Immersive Scenography in the Heart of Paris

Located in the very heart of the capital, on the majestic Place de la Concorde, the Hôtel de la Marine is already a must-visit destination in itself. Formerly the Royal Furniture Depot, exquisitely restored, this historic monument serves as a setting for an exhibition of a new kind, where each room is designed to appeal to a particular sense. Far from a linear presentation, The Seven Celestial Senses offers a multi-sensory journey that engages both body and mind.

Visitors are invited to explore perception in all its forms, through softly lit atmospheres, unexpected textures, mesmerizing sounds, and even evocative scents. This approach places the observer in an active role, where it is no longer just about “seeing” art, but about feeling it.

A Meeting Between Ancient Art and Contemporary Creation

The exhibition brings together around forty works, blending heritage pieces from various civilizations with contemporary creations by international artists. Among the most striking modern works are Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, with her painting From A Rhyme To A Reason (2024), and Salman Toor, whose work After Party (2019) stages a singular intimacy tinged with melancholy.

Cornelia Parker leaves a strong impression with Alter Ego (Absent, Present), a striking installation composed of crushed metal objects symbolizing the duality between presence and disappearance. Adrian Ghenie, meanwhile, questions identity and memory through his powerful painting The Uncle.

These pieces are set in dialogue with equally fascinating ancient objects, such as 16th-century Limoges enamels or French miniatures of rare precision. This juxtaposition of eras highlights a continuity in the way art seeks to capture the very essence of our perceptions.

A Soundscape Composed by Zsela

To enhance this immersion, American artist Zsela has created an original soundtrack that accompanies the visitor’s journey. Far from a simple musical background, this composition plays a central role in the experience: it creates an enveloping atmosphere that guides and amplifies the sensations felt in each space. This soundscape acts as an invisible thread connecting the artworks and visitors.

A Project Driven by a New Museological Vision

Behind this project is Olivier Berggruen, exhibition curator and art historian, recognized for his innovative and cross-disciplinary approaches. Here, he signs a staging that challenges conventions by refusing any hierarchy between ancient and contemporary art. The message is clear: regardless of their era, the works share a common vocation—to awaken our senses, question our place in the world, and stimulate our imagination.
