Paris 1874 was an excellent exhibition well worth the trip from the UK.
However the ticketing system was unusual in that tickets bought online in advance were more expensive than buying them on the door. Also people queuing in the “without ticket” line were admitted in large numbers ahead of those who had pre-booked tickets. This meant that the museum and exhibition were extremely crowded which detracted from the quality of our experience.
Editorial Review
The exhibition "Inventing Impressionism" at the Musée d'Orsay is much more than just a simple retrospective of famous works; it is a true immersion into the spirit and genesis of a revolutionary artistic movement that transformed our perception of light, color, and nature. Through an exceptional selection of paintings, this exhibition invites us to discover the origins of Impressionism by delving into the formative years of iconic artists such as Monet, Degas, and Renoir.
The value of this exhibition lies in its ability to contextualize the works on display. Rather than presenting them in isolation, the curators have chosen to associate them with historical and sociological elements that shed light on the circumstances of their creation. We learn how technical innovations, such as the invention of oil paint tubes, enabled these artists to express themselves freely outdoors, capturing the nuances of nature and the fleeting moments of everyday life.
The carefully designed layout of the galleries allows us to trace the evolution of ideas and techniques while highlighting the dialogue between different artists of the time. The works, accompanied by insightful commentary, reveal the mutual influences and creative rivalries that shaped this movement.
Ultimately, "Inventing Impressionism" reminds us that art is not static but is in constant evolution. This exhibition encourages us to reflect on our own relationship with art and beauty while celebrating a movement that continues to inspire and captivate generations. It is a must-visit for any art enthusiast eager to understand the richness of our cultural heritage. Visually stunning and intellectually stimulating, this exhibition is sure to touch hearts and awaken minds.
