What to expect
The exhibition "Daring Freedom" at the Pantheon in Paris, taking place from November 9, 2023, to February 11, 2024, offers a unique journey through the history of the struggles against slavery in France. It is an initiative of the Centre des monuments nationaux and the Foundation for the Memory of Slavery, providing a fresh perspective on this fight spanning four centuries and three continents. The exhibition is located in the crypt of the Pantheon and is open to the public for a fee of €11.50 for adults, with free admission for those under 26.
The exhibition addresses resistance to the colonial slave system, highlighting heroic figures, both famous and unknown, who have left their mark on this struggle. It includes personalities such as Abbé Grégoire, Condorcet, Toussaint Louverture, Louis Delgrès, Victor Schœlcher, Félix Éboué, Aimé Césaire, and Joséphine Baker.
In addition to its historical aspect, the exhibition presents a significant artistic dimension. Raphael Barontini, a 39-year-old artist, contributes with works depicting lesser-known figures in the fight against slavery, such as Sanité Bélair and Toussaint Louverture. These portraits, created using various techniques and cultural references, are displayed alongside nine other figures, in an effort to give a face to the often forgotten "resisters" of official history. Special attention is given to events like the Battle of Vertières, a crucial episode in the Haitian struggle for independence, often overlooked in traditional historical studies.
Putting these historical struggles into perspective raises contemporary reflections on the representation of black personalities in national memory spaces. For instance, the Pantheon has few black figures among the honored, despite their crucial role in the history of abolition. This reality is highlighted by the presence of commemorative plaques for figures like Toussaint Louverture and Louis Delgrès, in contrast to more represented white figures such as Abbé Grégoire and Victor Schœlcher.
The exhibition catalog, published by Éditions du patrimoine, comprises 182 pages and 150 illustrations, sold at around €40. It offers a rich and detailed supplement for those wishing to deepen their understanding of this crucial period in history.
In summary, "Daring Freedom" at the Pantheon in Paris is a multidimensional exhibition, combining history and art to evoke the struggles against slavery. It provides profound reflection on the heroic figures, often forgotten, of this fight and questions the representation of these heroes in French collective memory.
