What to expect

The exhibition "Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise: The Last Months," showcased at the Musée d'Orsay from October 3, 2023, to February 4, 2024, provides a unique perspective on the work of Vincent van Gogh. This exhibition is significant as it is the first to exclusively focus on the works created by Van Gogh during the last two months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris. It marks a pivotal moment in art history, signifying the final phase of Van Gogh's career—a period of intense artistic renewal and prolific creation despite personal and psychological struggles.

Arriving in Auvers-sur-Oise on May 20, 1890, Van Gogh spent just over two months in this village, during which he produced 74 paintings and 33 drawings. Among these works are some of his most famous masterpieces, such as "Doctor Paul Gachet," "The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise," and "Wheat Field with Crows." The exhibition features a selection of these works, including landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and unique double-square formats. Van Gogh immersed himself in his art during this period, exploring the landscapes of Auvers and capturing the life and characters of the village, including Dr. Gachet and his family.

Organized by the Public Establishment of the Musée d'Orsay and the Orangerie of Paris in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, this exhibition is the culmination of years of research. It was previously presented at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam from May 12 to September 3, 2023, as part of its 50th-anniversary celebration. Visitors are invited to delve into Van Gogh's palette, explore his works and techniques, in a thematic journey highlighting the various facets of his art. Museum entry includes access to this exhibition, although booking a time slot is recommended due to expected high attendance.

The exhibition not only highlights Van Gogh's works but also his life during this period. Visitors discover vibrant and colorful portraits of the people he encountered in Auvers-sur-Oise, as well as landscapes and flower bouquets. Additionally, documents such as Van Gogh's letters shed light on his melancholy-laden state of mind. The exhibition offers a complex and subjective perspective on Van Gogh's work, reflecting both the fragility and strength of his artistic touch.

Van Gogh's significance in art history is undeniable, and this exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay is an exceptional opportunity for art enthusiasts and visitors from around the world to immerse themselves in the ultimate creative phase of this iconic artist.

Très belle expo (Van Gogh) au musée d’Orsay.
Mais les billets sans créneau horaire fixé passent après les billets du musée avec, ce qui crée des frustrations.
