What to expect
Chéri Samba: A Renowned Congolese Artist
Chéri Samba, born in 1956 in Congo, is undoubtedly the most renowned African painter of his generation. As an ambassador of "popular painting" from Kinshasa, he has significantly contributed to popularizing this informal movement through his figurative paintings with vibrant colors that often challenge, denounce, caricature, and provoke with humor, in a style that is anything but naive.
The Exhibition at the Musée Maillol
The current exhibition at the Musée Maillol marks the first retrospective of the painter's work, spanning a period of 40 years of creation. It offers visitors a journey through several major "Sambaesque" themes. The self-portrait occupies a central place in his work, as do representations of Congo and Africa, geopolitical and environmental issues, art history, and finally, women. This last theme creates a unique dialogue with the work of Maillol, exhibited in the same museum.
All the works presented in this exhibition come from the Jean Pigozzi Collection, which is the largest collection of contemporary African art in the world. For over thirty years, this collection has contributed to the international recognition of artists from sub-Saharan Africa.

The museum is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility.
An elevator is available to access the floors.
The entrance is located at 59 Rue de Grenelle, through a green carriage door. You can ring the intercom "Guardian Security" to enter.
Wheelchairs are available upon request at the museum ticket office, in exchange for an ID.
Please note that strollers are not allowed in the museum. If necessary, bring a front baby carrier.
Opening Hours:
The museum is open every day.
Daily hours: 10:30 am - 6:30 pm every day, including holidays.
Late nights: The museum is open until 10 pm on Wednesdays.
Evacuation of museum spaces starting at 6:15 pm.
Cash desks close 1 hour and 30 minutes before closing.
