Noël Coypel: A Master of Grand Décors of the 17th Century
Noël Coypel (1628 - 1707) was a versatile artist whose brilliant career extended across various fields of art, including painted ceilings, altar paintings, tapestry cartoons, and easel paintings. After receiving his initial training in Orléans, he returned to Paris and contributed to the decoration of Luigi Rossi's opera, Orfeo. It was there that he was noticed by the painter Charles Errard, who was responsible for the paintings in the royal apartments, and thus, Coypel became a key figure in the grand décor in service of the monarchy.
An Artist with an Exceptional Academic Journey
Noël Coypel was not just a talented decorator; he also climbed the ranks of the academic career. In 1663, he became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, and by 1664, he was appointed a professor. Later, he directed the French Academy in Rome from 1672 to 1676, and then the Parisian Academy in 1695. This first exhibition dedicated to Noël Coypel highlights this exceptional artist through a selection of 90 works, including paintings, drawings, tapestry cartoons, and much more.
