Edvard Munch was born in Norway in 1863. Growing up in a Norwegian bourgeoisie family, his life was marked by death and illness. Losing his mother and sister at an early age, followed by the death of his father shortly after, Munch also experienced several nervous breakdowns throughout his life. These events profoundly influenced Munch and his work. Studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kristiania and later in Oslo, he was exposed to the ideas of Art Nouveau. Munch also traveled to Germany and France, where he was influenced by the artists of the Impressionist movement. Returning to Norway in 1885, he began working on what would become his most famous piece, The Scream. Continuing to paint and engrave throughout his life, Edvard Munch passed away in 1944.
