What to expect

Located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, in Square Louis XVI (29 rue Pasquier), the Chapelle Expiatoire is one of the lesser-known yet most astonishing monuments in the capital. This is where the bodies of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were buried after being condemned to the guillotine. Its beautiful late Neoclassical architecture, tombstones dedicated to the Swiss Guards, apse, sculptures, Doric-style portico, and remarkable lateral gallery give it a unique charm. This small architectural gem, steeped in history, is open from Tuesday to Saturday from April to September (10:00 am-12:30 pm and 1:30 pm-6:30 pm) and can be visited in just one hour. It provides ample time to immerse oneself in the heart of the Revolution, a major episode in French history. Built in the early 19th century and classified as a historical monument in 1914, the Chapelle Expiatoire offers an original visit idea in the center of Paris. Admission to the site is free for those under 18, job seekers, and people with disabilities.
