Les expositions temporaires du Musée d'Orsay

The temporary exhibitions at the Musée d'Orsay are a must-see for visitors as they provide the opportunity to discover new fascinating artworks, learn more about art history, and enjoy an interactive and immersive visiting experience.

Édouard Manet's "Déjeuner sur l'herbe" and "Olympia" are two of the museum's most famous works. "Déjeuner sur l'herbe," created in 1863, is a scandalous painting that received criticism for its depiction of a nude woman outdoors surrounded by fully clothed men. "Olympia," painted in 1865, portrays a nude prostitute lying on a bed with a black cat at her feet. These two works are considered significant examples of modern art and have influenced subsequent artistic movements.

Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night" is also an iconic artwork at the Musée d'Orsay. Painted in 1889, the painting depicts a lively nocturnal landscape with swirling movements and sparkling stars. Van Gogh created this piece while undergoing treatment in an asylum in Provence, and it has become a symbol of his struggle with mental illness and artistic genius.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir's "Dance" is an emblematic painting at the Musée d'Orsay, depicting two women dancing together. Painted in 1883, the artwork is considered a celebration of Parisian life and the joy of living, with its vibrant colors and happy subject.

Paul Cézanne's "Montagne Sainte-Victoire" series consists of paintings representing the Sainte-Victoire mountain near Aix-en-Provence. Painted between 1882 and 1906, these works were influential in the development of modern art, particularly the Cubist movement.

In summary, the Musée d'Orsay houses numerous iconic artworks that represent some of the most important artistic movements in art history. Each piece is unique and has its own fascinating story, making it a must-visit for art enthusiasts from around the world.

They do warn on the website but be aware that the climb to the top via a circular staircase can be quite tiring - there are a lot of steps! There are a couple of 'doorways' (not actual doors) on the way up where you can pause and take a breath, letting others pass by. Once up there the views are great, thoroughly recommended.
