Cathedral at St. Denis
The tics were delivered to my email box. So easy and convenient! We just hopped in a cab and went. The cathedral is very interesting as it is the burial place of so many kings and queens. It is being renovated but that wasn’t a problem. Everything was very clean. Impressive job! Ok, so it will help to read up on it because everything is in French without English translations but it’s not difficult to identify the caskets. The cathedral is located in an older area so keep your belongings close to you. I didn’t feel threatened but I was watchful. The people working at the Cathedral are bilingual and very helpful. Definitely worth a visit if you love history or architecture. I will use this company again. Good communication too. Michele

I have been to Paris before, and a friend brought this to my attention. It was a very enjoyable experience, and not at all crowded. I recommend it highly.

Merci

The Basilica of Saint-Denis: A Treasure of History and Art.

The Basilica of Saint-Denis, a gem of Gothic architecture, is much more than just a religious building. Located north of Paris, it embodies the history of France through its millennia-old stones, reflecting the artistic and political evolution of the country. It is primarily known as the burial site of the kings of France, which gives it a unique symbolic significance.

From the moment visitors enter, they are struck by the majesty of the nave, where light filters through the stained glass windows, illuminating the chapels that celebrate the richness of our heritage. Founded in the 1st century, the basilica has undergone numerous transformations, particularly in the 12th century under the influence of Abbot Suger, who introduced architectural innovations such as flying buttresses and ribbed vaults, giving the structure its soaring and luminous appearance.

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the basilica is its role as a royal necropolis. As one wanders through the crypt, they may encounter the tombs of iconic figures such as Francis I, Marie Antoinette, and even Louis XVI. Each tomb is an invitation to delve into history, to imagine the lives of these sovereigns who shaped our nation.

The Basilica of Saint-Denis is not merely a place of remembrance; it is a mirror of an era where spirituality and earthly power intertwined closely. Today, it stands as an essential site for anyone interested in the history of France. By preserving this masterpiece, we safeguard a shared heritage, a collective memory that deserves to be celebrated and passed on to future generations. Each visit is a history lesson, a moment of contemplation that humbles us before the grandeur of the past. This is why the Basilica of Saint-Denis deserves our eternal admiration and respect.
